Hybrid communication has changed what we expect from shared spaces.

Today, a meeting may include people sitting around a table, colleagues joining from another campus or office, and participants working remotely. In schools, Microsoft Teams can support leadership meetings, professional development, collaboration between campuses and, in appropriate circumstances, lessons involving students joining remotely.

However, a laptop connected to a display is not always enough to create an effective experience for everyone involved.

When several people share the same room, remote participants need to be able to see the people speaking, hear the conversation clearly and follow shared content. At the same time, the people in the room need a simple way to join and manage the meeting.

This is where Microsoft Teams Rooms can provide a more dedicated approach to hybrid collaboration.

Microsoft Teams Rooms brings the Microsoft Teams experience into a shared physical space using purpose-built hardware and software. Depending on the room, this can include cameras, microphones, speakers, displays and a dedicated touch console.

For schools and organisations planning new meeting spaces or upgrading existing ones, the focus should not simply be on installing Teams. The room itself needs to be designed around how people meet, teach, present and participate remotely.

What Is Microsoft Teams Rooms?

Microsoft Teams Rooms is designed specifically for shared meeting spaces.

Rather than requiring each meeting host to connect their laptop and configure a camera, microphone and speakers, a dedicated Teams Rooms system can be installed in the room and connected to the appropriate AV equipment.

Depending on the size and requirements of the space, a Microsoft Teams Room may include:

One or two displays

A dedicated camera or multiple cameras

Microphones

Speakers

A touch screen console

A Teams Rooms compute system or integrated conferencing device

Content-sharing connections

Touch-enabled displays or collaboration boards

Microsoft Teams Rooms is available in both Windows and Android-based configurations. The available features can vary according to the platform, hardware, software version and licensing.

The room interface can provide access to scheduled meetings and meeting controls, while the installed AV equipment handles the room’s audio and video requirements.

For organisations already using Microsoft Teams, this provides a familiar platform within a dedicated room environment.

Why Use a Dedicated Microsoft Teams Room?

A laptop, display and USB conferencing device can work well for some smaller spaces. However, the limitations can become more noticeable as rooms become larger or more people participate.

A laptop camera may not capture everyone in the room. People sitting further away may be difficult to hear. Users may also need to connect cables and configure devices before each meeting.

A dedicated Teams Room takes a different approach by making the meeting technology part of the room itself.

The cameras, microphones, speakers and displays can be selected and positioned according to the room’s size and layout. The system is then available whenever the room is needed, rather than relying on one person’s laptop.

This can also simplify the user experience. Instead of configuring multiple devices before a meeting, users can interact with the room’s dedicated controls to join meetings and manage available functions.

For a small meeting room, this might mean a relatively simple integrated video conferencing device. A larger boardroom may require separate cameras, microphones, speakers and displays.

The important consideration is not how much technology can be installed, but what technology the room actually needs.

Microsoft Teams Rooms for Schools

Schools can use dedicated Teams Rooms in a variety of spaces, including administration areas, leadership rooms, professional development spaces and classrooms.

The requirements will vary depending on whether the room is being used for staff collaboration, external meetings or teaching.

Supporting Hybrid Lessons With Remote Students

One potential educational application is hybrid teaching, where some students are physically present in the classroom while others participate remotely.

Microsoft Teams for Education provides the broader teaching and learning environment, including virtual meetings, content sharing and class collaboration. Microsoft Teams Rooms can provide the dedicated audio and video environment within the physical classroom.

For example, a teacher could conduct a lesson with students in the classroom while remote students join the same Teams meeting from another location.

The classroom’s Teams Rooms system can provide dedicated cameras, microphones, speakers and displays, helping remote students see and hear the lesson without relying solely on a laptop positioned at the front of the room.

However, a hybrid classroom is not simply a meeting room with desks replaced by student tables.

The AV design needs to reflect how teaching actually takes place. Depending on the classroom, schools may need to consider:

Whether remote students need to see the teacher, students, teaching area or a combination

Camera positioning and field of view

Whether multiple camera views are appropriate

Microphone coverage for teachers and students

How lesson content is shared

Where remote students are displayed for the teacher

Classroom acoustics

How naturally the teacher can move around the room while teaching

In some classrooms, a single wide-angle camera may be appropriate. Larger or more complex spaces may benefit from multiple cameras or other specialised equipment. Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows supports multiple camera views in supported configurations.

The aim is to create an environment where remote students can participate in the lesson, rather than simply watching a single camera feed.

Leadership and Administration

Schools with multiple campuses or teams working across different locations may use Teams Rooms for leadership and administration meetings.

A dedicated room can provide a consistent environment for regular meetings without requiring staff to set up conferencing equipment each time.

Professional Development

Professional development sessions may involve presenters joining remotely or staff participating from different locations.

A suitable room configuration can help remote presenters be clearly seen and heard while allowing staff in the room to contribute.

Meetings With External Organisations

Schools regularly meet with consultants, architects, specialists, suppliers and other organisations.

A dedicated conferencing space can provide a more appropriate environment for these discussions than relying on a laptop camera positioned at one end of a large table.

Microsoft Teams Rooms for Offices

For workplaces, Teams Rooms can provide a consistent approach to shared meeting spaces.

Without a standardised approach, employees may encounter a different system in every room. One space might rely on a USB camera, another on a video bar, while another requires multiple cables and separate controls.

A Teams Rooms strategy can help create a more familiar experience across meeting spaces.

Microsoft provides certified Teams devices for different room types and use cases, including systems and peripherals covering areas such as audio, video, displays and room controls.

For IT Managers and Business Managers, this can also make it easier to establish standards when planning multiple meeting rooms.

What Does a Microsoft Teams Room Need?

There is no single Teams Rooms configuration that suits every space.

The right solution depends on factors such as:

Room size

Number of participants

Seating and table layout

Typical meeting or teaching format

Camera coverage

Microphone requirements

Display requirements

Content-sharing needs

Room acoustics

Existing AV infrastructure

Network and IT requirements

Small Meeting Rooms

A small room may only require an integrated conferencing device combining a camera, microphones and speakers.

When participants are seated relatively close together, this can provide a straightforward solution without unnecessary complexity.

Medium Meeting Rooms

As the distance between participants increases, audio and camera coverage require more consideration.

A medium-sized room may benefit from separate AV components depending on its layout and intended use.

Large Boardrooms and Conference Rooms

Larger spaces often require a more tailored approach.

A system could include:

PTZ cameras

Ceiling or table microphones

Distributed speakers

Dual displays

Dedicated Teams Rooms hardware

Multiple content-sharing options

Integrated AV control

Equipment placement, sightlines, microphone coverage and room acoustics can all influence the final experience.

Classrooms and Hybrid Learning Spaces

Classrooms may have additional requirements because teachers and students are not necessarily seated in one fixed position.

The AV system may need to capture a teacher moving around the room, student participation and teaching content while also providing remote students with an appropriate view of the lesson.

The best configuration will depend on the teaching style, classroom layout and level of remote participation.

Windows vs Android Teams Rooms

Microsoft Teams Rooms is available on both Windows and Android.

Both provide a dedicated Teams experience for shared spaces, but specific capabilities can vary according to the platform, hardware, software and licensing.

For organisations, the decision should therefore be based on the requirements of the room rather than simply choosing one operating system over another.

Consider:

Required Teams features

Room size and layout

Available hardware

Existing IT standards

Device management requirements

Long-term support and lifecycle considerations

Starting with the room’s requirements can help ensure the selected system is appropriate for the intended use.

Why AV Design Still Matters

Microsoft Teams Rooms provides the meeting platform and room interface, but the physical AV environment still determines much of the user experience.

A high-quality camera cannot compensate for poor positioning. A sophisticated microphone system cannot overcome every acoustic challenge. A large display may still be difficult to use if it is poorly positioned or too small for the viewing distance.

For this reason, a successful Teams Room should consider the room as a complete system.

Audio

Microphones should provide appropriate coverage for the people who need to participate, while speakers should deliver clear audio to those in the room.

Video

Camera position and field of view should reflect how people use the space. In larger rooms, multiple cameras may be appropriate.

Displays

Displays should be positioned and sized according to the room and how remote participants and shared content will be viewed.

Content Sharing

Users should be able to share presentations and other content without a complicated setup process.

Acoustics

Background noise and reflective surfaces can affect speech intelligibility, particularly in larger rooms and classrooms.

Ease of Use

Even a technically capable system needs to be straightforward enough for staff and teachers to use confidently.

The objective is not simply to install conferencing equipment. It is to create a room that supports the way people actually communicate.

Bringing IT and AV Together

Microsoft Teams Rooms projects often sit between IT and AV responsibilities.

IT teams may manage Microsoft 365, networking, security, accounts and device management, while AV requirements can include displays, cameras, microphones, speakers, control systems and physical installation.

Planning these elements together can help avoid issues where equipment has been selected before practical requirements such as camera placement, microphone coverage, cabling, power or network connectivity have been considered.

Microsoft’s deployment guidance also recommends considering site readiness and working across the relevant technical and facilities teams when deploying Teams Rooms.

For schools and organisations, involving IT, facilities and AV stakeholders early can help create a more coordinated installation.

Managing Multiple Teams Rooms

Managing several Teams Rooms across a school campus, multiple offices or different locations introduces additional considerations around standardisation and support.

Using consistent room designs and appropriate hardware can make spaces easier for users to navigate while helping IT teams manage the wider deployment.

Microsoft provides management capabilities for Teams devices through its administration tools, with functionality depending on the Teams Rooms configuration and licensing.

The Microsoft Teams Rooms Pro Management platform is a a one-stop portal for device planning, monitoring, and proactive management for MS Teams Rooms.

Organisations should also consider the wider AV environment. Displays, cameras, microphones, speakers and other connected equipment form part of the overall room system and may need to be included in support and maintenance planning.

Choosing the Right Microsoft Teams Rooms Solution

The best Teams Room is not necessarily the system with the longest list of features.

It is the system that suits the space, the technology environment and the people using it.

Before selecting equipment, consider:

How many people normally use the room?

How frequently are remote participants involved?

What type of meetings or lessons take place there?

What do remote participants need to see and hear?

Does the room require one display or two?

Does everyone need to be visible on camera?

How far are participants from the microphones?

Are there acoustic challenges?

How will users share content?

Who will manage and support the system?

For schools, there is one additional question worth asking:

How do we want remote students or staff to participate in the learning or meeting experience?

The answer can influence the entire AV design, from camera coverage and microphone selection through to display placement and content sharing.

Creating Better Hybrid Meeting and Learning Spaces

Microsoft Teams Rooms can provide a dedicated foundation for hybrid meetings and, in appropriate educational environments, hybrid learning.

But the platform is only one part of the solution.

The effectiveness of a Teams Room depends on how well the technology is matched to the physical space and how people actually use it. Cameras, microphones, speakers, displays, room acoustics and control systems all need to work together to create a practical experience for both in-room and remote participants.

For schools, this can extend beyond staff meetings and professional development to classrooms where students participate remotely. For offices, it can provide a more consistent approach to collaboration across shared meeting spaces.

D.I.B Audio Visual can assist schools and organisations with the design, supply and installation of integrated AV and collaboration spaces, including Microsoft Teams Rooms environments tailored to the requirements of each room.

When an organisation invests in audio visual technology, the equipment is only part of the choice.

A projector, LED display, microphone or video conferencing system is the most visible part of an AV installation. The result also depends on how the system is designed, installed, integrated and supported over time.

For schools and workplaces, this matters. AV systems may need to support teaching, meetings, presentations, assemblies, performances, training and video conferencing.

Choosing the right AV partner can matter just as much as choosing the right equipment.

If you are comparing audio visual services in Australia, start with the room, not the spec sheet.

Established in 1999, D.I.B. Audio Visual has more than 27 years of experience designing, supplying, installing and servicing AV systems for schools, businesses and organisations across Victoria. Our work starts with how the space will be used and builds a practical plan around those needs.

What Makes a Good AV Partner?

There are many companies offering audio visual services in Australia, but an effective AV plan needs more than equipment.

A good AV partner should understand the space, the people using it and what the system needs to do.

Before recommending equipment, it is important to consider:

The room’s purpose

Room size, layout and acoustics

Lighting and sight lines

Existing equipment and infrastructure

Connectivity requirements

Accessibility

Budget and project limits

Future expansion

Ongoing service and support

The aim is not to fit the newest or most complex technology. It is to build a system that does the job well and is easy for people to use.

At D.I.B., our AV design approach focuses on simplicity, clear objectives, less is more, and reliable performance.

1. AV Design Starts With the Space

Every room has different needs.

A classroom may need a simple display and presentation system. A meeting room may need video conferencing and room control. A library, outdoor learning area or shared space may need a different mix of technologies.

This means there is rarely one AV solution that works everywhere.

D.I.B. starts by understanding how each space will be used, then designs the technology around those needs.

MacKillop Catholic Regional College

D.I.B. has worked with MacKillop Catholic Regional College since 2012, including the AV design and installation for its new St Mary’s Campus in Werribee.

By becoming involved during the early planning stages, D.I.B. could work with the architects and AV team to consider equipment locations, cable runs and rack locations as part of the wider building design.

The campus now includes consistent classroom AV, interactive displays, video conferencing, digital signage and room booking systems, with different solutions designed for different spaces.

A motorised projector setup in MacKillop Catholic Regional College’s Project Space.

The project demonstrates why AV design is about more than selecting individual products. Understanding the space first can help create a system that is practical, consistent and easier for staff to use.

2. Simple AV Systems Are Easier to Use

An AV system can be technically capable and still be difficult to operate.

In schools and workplaces, systems are often used by people with different levels of technical experience. A teacher may need to start a presentation between classes. A staff member may need to begin a video call without calling IT.

Ease of use should therefore be part of the design from the start.

D.I.B. can incorporate touchscreens, simple menus, clear input labels and automated functions to make systems easier to operate.

Hoppers Crossing Secondary College

At Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, the gymnasium needed to support assemblies, graduations, performances and whole-school events.

Triple projector setup delivering clear visuals across Hoppers Crossing Secondary College’s gym.

The upgraded system combines projection, large motorised screens, audio, PTZ cameras and recording and streaming capabilities.

Despite the system’s range of functions, D.I.B. designed a password-protected touchscreen interface with clear icons and labels, allowing staff to operate the system without managing each component individually.

Read the full Hoppers Crossing Secondary College case study →

The project is a good example of a key AV principle: a system can have considerable technical capability while remaining simple for day-to-day users.

3. Choose the Right Technology, Not Just the Newest Technology

AV technology in Australia changes quickly. New projectors, displays, microphones, cameras and control systems are continually introduced.

But newer does not always mean better.

One type of equipment may work well in one room and be a poor fit in another. The right choice depends on the room, its users and what the organisation needs the system to do.

For example, LED displays can suit rooms that need high brightness, clear visibility and large images. Projectors can still be a practical choice where very large images, flexibility or a particular room layout make them the better fit.

The key question is not simply what the latest technology is.

It is what technology makes sense for the space.

Marian College

Marian College’s gymnasium is used for assemblies, performances, presentations, rehearsals and sport.

For its AV upgrade, D.I.B. replaced the existing projection system with two impact-resistant Aurora LED wall displays, supported by Fohhn Audio speakers and a custom Extron control interface.

Impact resistant Aurora LED walls for Marian College’s gym.

The project was planned around the requirements of a busy, multi-use gymnasium, with visibility, durability, audio coverage and ease of operation all considered.

D.I.B.’s involvement in the redevelopment also allowed cabling and LED wall support infrastructure to be incorporated during construction.

Read the full Marian College case study →

The project demonstrates why AV decisions are often best made by looking at the space and its intended use rather than simply choosing the newest available technology.

4. Professional Installation Matters

Even the right equipment can fall short if it is poorly installed or configured.

Projectors need to be positioned with care. Displays and LED walls need suitable mounting and structural support. Cabling needs to be planned and labelled, while audio systems need to be configured for the acoustics of the room.

Installation can also require coordination with builders, electricians, architects and other trades, especially during school upgrades and new builds.

Early involvement can make a difference. At MacKillop Catholic Regional College, for example, AV requirements could be considered during the building planning process rather than being treated as an addition after construction.

D.I.B. also uses its own delivery staff rather than relying solely on subcontractors, with detailed check sheets and technical records forming part of the installation process.

A professional installation should leave the organisation with an AV system that is properly integrated into the space and ready for everyday use.

5. AV Support Doesn’t Stop After Installation

An AV project should not end when the system is switched on for the first time.

Technology will eventually need servicing, fault finding, adjustment or replacement. Rooms change. Staff change. Organisations may also want to expand their systems over time.

D.I.B. has a dedicated service team providing post-installation support and maintenance. For installations completed by D.I.B, the company also offers an onsite three-year warranty for installation works, subject to conditions.

For organisations that depend on AV every day, ongoing support can be an important part of the overall investment.

The right AV partner should be able to help not only when a system is first installed, but throughout its working life.

6. Experience Across Schools and Workplaces

AV needs go far beyond classrooms and meeting rooms.

Schools may need systems for gyms, libraries, halls, performing arts spaces and outdoor areas. Businesses may need AV across boardrooms, meeting rooms, training areas, offices and larger presentation spaces.

D.I.B. has experience working across these environments and shaping systems around each space’s needs.

Qanstruct

At Qanstruct’s Kew headquarters, D.I.B. delivered AV systems across the company’s auditorium and office spaces.

The auditorium incorporates a large curved LED video wall, Microsoft Teams video conferencing, cameras, ceiling microphones, loudspeakers and hearing augmentation. Smaller office spaces use displays, meeting room systems and room booking systems.

The large curved LED wall in Qanstruct’s auditorium.

The systems were designed around simple operation, with USB-C connectivity allowing users to connect their devices without working through complex menus.

Read the full Qanstruct case study →

The project demonstrates how AV can be designed across different workplace environments while keeping everyday operation straightforward.

7. Long-Term AV Partnerships

Choosing an AV provider is not only about the current project.

AV needs change over time. A classroom display upgrade may later become part of a wider campus refresh. A gym may eventually need additional cameras or streaming capabilities. A meeting room may need to change as conferencing requirements shift.

Working with an AV partner that understands an organisation’s existing setup can make future upgrades easier to plan.

D.I.B.’s relationships with schools such as MacKillop Catholic Regional College and Marian College demonstrate this longer-term approach. Rather than treating each installation as an isolated project, an ongoing relationship allows an AV provider to build an understanding of a site’s technology, needs and future plans.

Why Choose D.I.B. Audio Visual?

For schools, businesses and other organisations looking for audio visual services in Victoria, Australia, choosing an AV partner is about more than finding equipment.

D.I.B. supports the full AV project lifecycle:

Consultation and design – Understanding the space, users and objectives before recommending technology.

Equipment supply – Selecting appropriate audio visual equipment from established AV manufacturers.

Professional installation – Installing systems with consideration for structure, ease of use and the wider environment.

Control and integration – Making complex systems easier for day-to-day users to operate.

Service and maintenance – Providing ongoing technical support after installation.

Future upgrades – Helping organisations adapt their AV systems as needs change.

D.I.B.’s design, supply, installation and service teams work together to deliver professional AV services for spaces from classrooms and libraries to gyms, halls, boardrooms and corporate offices.

The goal stays the same: build an AV system that suits the space, works well for its users and provides reliable performance.

More Than AV Equipment

There is no shortage of audio visual equipment today.

The challenge is knowing what you actually need.

A larger display is not always better. The newest projector is not always the right projector. More features do not always lead to a better user experience.

Good AV design starts with what the room needs to achieve.

That is why D.I.B. focuses on simple operation, clear objectives, performance and reliability when developing audio visual solutions. New technology is considered based on whether it provides a meaningful benefit for the application, rather than simply adding more features.

With more than 27 years of experience across education and business environments, D.I.B. Audio Visual can help organisations assess their needs, develop an appropriate solution and support that system after installation.

As display technology continues to evolve, more organisations are looking beyond traditional projectors and LCD displays for larger, brighter and more immersive visual experiences. One solution attracting significant attention is Samsung The Wall, Samsung’s premium MicroLED display designed for environments where image quality, scale and visual impact are equally important.

For schools, businesses and other organisations planning a major audiovisual upgrade, Samsung The Wall can be an excellent solution—but only when it is matched to the right application.

What Is Samsung The Wall?

Samsung The Wall is a modular direct-view MicroLED display designed for large commercial spaces. Unlike projectors, which shine light onto a screen, or LCD displays that rely on a backlight, every MicroLED emits its own light. This enables exceptional brightness, deep contrast and vibrant colour while maintaining a seamless image across very large display sizes.

Millions of microscopic LEDs are assembled into modular display cabinets that join together to form one continuous display. This flexible design allows Samsung The Wall to be customised for different room sizes and layouts while maintaining sharp images, fine detail and excellent visibility—even in brightly lit environments. Its fine pixel pitch also helps keep text, graphics and video looking crisp for viewers seated both near and far.

Key Features

Samsung The Wall combines several technologies that make it well suited to premium commercial environments:

Modular design – Build a display that suits the size and layout of the space.

Fine pixel pitch – Helps deliver detailed images and crisp text, even at closer viewing distances.

Self-emissive MicroLED technology – Produces excellent brightness, deep blacks, high contrast and accurate colour reproduction without a traditional backlight.

Commercial-grade reliability – Designed for professional environments where displays may operate for extended hours each day.

Samsung also incorporates AI-powered image processing to help optimise lower-resolution presentations and video content, allowing everyday teaching materials and business presentations to appear clearer on a large display.

Where Schools Can Use Samsung The Wall

Samsung The Wall is not intended to replace classroom interactive displays or projectors. Instead, it is best suited to shared learning environments where a premium large-format display can enhance communication and engagement.

Typical applications include:

Auditoriums and performing arts centres for assemblies, concerts, productions and graduation ceremonies.

Reception areas and school entrances for digital welcome displays, announcements and showcasing student achievements.

Lecture theatres, STEM facilities and specialist learning spaces where detailed diagrams, engineering models, CAD drawings and multimedia presentations benefit from a large, high-quality display.

Multi-purpose halls used for parent information evenings, professional development sessions and community events.

Its seamless large-format design allows presentations and video content to remain easy to see throughout the room, while eliminating projector shadows and the visible bezels associated with tiled LCD video walls.

Where Businesses Can Use Samsung The Wall

Businesses can also benefit from Samsung The Wall in spaces where presentation quality and visual impact are priorities.

Common applications include executive boardrooms, customer experience centres, corporate reception areas, innovation spaces, control rooms and conference venues. Its large seamless display makes it well suited to presentations, dashboards, digital signage, video conferencing and branded content that needs to be viewed by larger audiences.

Is Samsung The Wall Right for Every Space?

Not necessarily.

While Samsung The Wall offers exceptional image quality and flexibility, it is generally intended for premium large-format installations rather than everyday teaching or meeting spaces.

For standard classrooms and many meeting rooms, schools and businesses may achieve better value with interactive displays, commercial displays or laser projectors. These solutions often provide the screen sizes, collaboration features and functionality required for day-to-day use at a lower overall investment.

In Part 1 of this guide, we explored how AI-powered PTZ cameras are changing the way schools record lessons. By automatically tracking teachers and reducing the need for manual camera operation, these systems make lecture capture and hybrid learning more practical than ever.

But tracking the teacher is only one piece of the puzzle.

A truly effective lesson recording should capture everything students need to revisit the class—not just the teacher, but also what’s written on the whiteboard, what’s displayed on the screen, classroom discussions and the lesson itself in a format that’s easy to access later.

That’s why many schools are looking beyond standalone AI cameras and investing in complete lecture capture solutions that bring video, audio and recording together into one seamless workflow.

What Makes a Lesson Worth Rewatching?

Think about the last lesson a student revisited before an exam.

They weren’t watching the recording simply to see the teacher again. They were trying to understand a concept they had forgotten, revisit an explanation they didn’t fully grasp or review notes they couldn’t finish writing during class.

For that recording to be genuinely useful, it needs to recreate the learning experience as closely as possible.

Students need to clearly see demonstrations, presentations and handwritten explanations. They need to hear discussions without straining to understand conversations. And they need recordings that are available when and where they’re needed, whether that’s through the school’s Learning Management System (LMS), Microsoft Teams or another platform.

Achieving that requires more than intelligent camera tracking—it requires multiple technologies working together behind the scenes.

Keeping the Teacher in Focus

One of the biggest advantages of AI-powered PTZ cameras is that teachers can teach naturally without worrying about staying inside a fixed camera frame.

As they move between the whiteboard, interactive display and different areas of the classroom, presenter tracking automatically follows them. If they leave the teaching zone to assist students, the system can temporarily switch to a wider view before seamlessly resuming tracking when they return.

The result is a lesson that feels natural to watch, without requiring anyone to operate the camera.

Students Need to See What the Teacher Sees

A great lesson isn’t defined by where the teacher stands—it’s defined by what they’re explaining.

Imagine a mathematics teacher solving equations on the whiteboard before switching to an interactive display to demonstrate graphing software. Or a science teacher moving between diagrams, videos and live demonstrations throughout the lesson.

If the recording focuses only on the presenter, students may miss the very content they’re trying to revise.

Modern lecture capture systems solve this by intelligently adapting to what’s happening in the classroom. When a teacher begins writing on the whiteboard, the camera can temporarily adjust to make handwritten notes easier to read. When a presentation or interactive display becomes the focus, the system can switch to a direct digital feed rather than filming the screen, ensuring students see every detail clearly without glare or reflections.

These transitions happen automatically, allowing recordings to follow the flow of the lesson without interrupting teaching.

For subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Design Technologies and STEM, preserving both the teacher’s explanations and the learning content can make recordings significantly more valuable during revision.

Great Video Starts With Great Audio

While cameras often receive the most attention, clear audio is just as important.

Students are far more likely to tolerate average video than poor sound quality. If they can’t hear explanations clearly or follow classroom discussions, even the sharpest video becomes difficult to learn from.

Beamforming microphone arrays help address this by capturing voices across the classroom while prioritising the teacher’s speech. Whether the lesson involves demonstrations, student questions or collaborative discussions, the system helps maintain consistent, intelligible audio without requiring teachers to manage additional microphones.

Recording Lessons Shouldn’t Create More Work

One of the biggest challenges with lecture capture has never been the technology itself—it’s adoption.

If recording lessons requires teachers to remember multiple steps before every class, it quickly becomes another task competing for their attention.

Modern lecture capture systems are designed to remove that friction.

Teachers can begin recording with a single touch, while schools can also schedule recordings for recurring classes automatically. Once a lesson finishes, recordings can be stored locally, uploaded to school servers or integrated directly into an LMS.

Many systems also support USB video output, allowing the classroom camera to function as a high-quality webcam for Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and other hybrid learning platforms without requiring separate video equipment.

By automating the recording process, schools can create a more consistent experience for both teachers and students while reducing the workload on classroom staff.

An Example of an Integrated Lecture Capture System

Rather than piecing together separate cameras, microphones, recording software and publishing tools, many schools are choosing integrated lecture capture platforms that combine these capabilities into a single solution.

DiscoveryLab Pro is one example designed specifically for education.

Instead of focusing solely on recording video, the platform brings together AI-powered presenter tracking, professional classroom audio, presentation capture and automated recording into one coordinated workflow. As teachers move through the lesson, the system intelligently captures the presenter, classroom content and audio while preparing recordings for distribution afterwards.

For schools that primarily deliver lessons through Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, DiscoveryLab Lite offers a simplified USB-based alternative. By using a connected classroom computer instead of dedicated recording hardware, it provides many of the same capabilities while offering a deployment option suited to smaller learning spaces or schools with different recording requirements.

Rather than replacing existing teaching practices, both solutions are designed to work quietly in the background so teachers can focus on teaching, not technology.

Planning an AI-Ready Classroom

As schools continue investing in digital learning environments, choosing the right lecture capture solution involves more than selecting an AI-powered camera.

Before making that investment, it’s worth considering a few practical questions:

How frequently will lessons be recorded?

Will recordings primarily support revision, hybrid learning or both?

Does the classroom rely heavily on interactive displays or whiteboards?

Is high-quality classroom audio essential?

Will recordings need to integrate with Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or the school’s LMS?

Could the solution be expanded across additional classrooms in the future?

Answering these questions early helps schools invest in technology that supports both today’s teaching practices and tomorrow’s learning environments.

Working with an experienced AV integrator can also help ensure cameras, microphones, displays and recording platforms operate as one connected ecosystem rather than a collection of standalone devices.

Beyond the Camera

AI-powered PTZ cameras have transformed classroom recording by making presenter tracking automatic and lecture capture more accessible for schools.

But as teaching continues to evolve, it’s becoming increasingly clear that cameras alone don’t create meaningful learning resources.

The most effective lecture capture systems combine intelligent video, clear classroom audio, seamless presentation capture and automated recording into a single workflow that supports teachers without changing how they teach.

Solutions such as DiscoveryLab Pro demonstrate how these technologies can work together, helping schools create lesson recordings that are easier to produce, easier to access and ultimately more valuable for student learning.

For schools planning future-ready classrooms, the goal isn’t simply to record lessons—it’s to capture the entire learning experience.

A lesson doesn’t end when the bell rings.

Students may need to revisit complex concepts before exams, teachers may want to share recordings with students who were absent, and schools are increasingly delivering lessons across multiple campuses or supporting hybrid learning environments. At the same time, professional development sessions, guest presentations and school events are also being recorded more frequently.

Creating high-quality classroom recordings, however, has traditionally been easier said than done. Static cameras often fail to capture teachers as they move around the room, while manually operating a camera requires additional staff and equipment that most schools simply don’t have.

This is where AI-powered PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras are changing the way schools approach lecture capture and classroom recording.

Unlike conventional cameras, AI-powered PTZ cameras can automatically follow presenters, intelligently frame lessons and adapt to changing classroom activities without requiring constant manual control. When integrated into a broader lecture capture solution, they can help schools create engaging recordings that support teaching, learning and collaboration while keeping technology simple for educators.

In this guide, we’ll explore how AI-powered PTZ cameras work, the features that matter most in education, and how solutions such as DiscoveryLab Pro can bring cameras, audio and lesson recording together into one streamlined classroom recording system.

What Is an AI-Powered PTZ Camera?

A PTZ camera is a remotely controllable camera capable of panning, tilting and zooming to capture different areas of a room. These cameras have been widely used in education, corporate environments and live production for many years because they offer greater flexibility than traditional fixed cameras.

Modern AI-powered PTZ cameras build on this technology by incorporating onboard artificial intelligence that analyses activity within the room. Instead of relying on someone to manually reposition the camera, the system can automatically determine where attention should be focused.

Depending on the model, AI-powered PTZ cameras may be able to:

Automatically follow a teacher as they move around the classroom.

Keep presenters centred in the frame.

Detect when multiple people are participating and adjust framing accordingly.

Focus on the active speaker during discussions.

Ignore movement outside designated teaching areas.

Switch between different framing modes based on classroom activity.

Rather than becoming another piece of technology teachers need to manage, AI allows the camera to work quietly in the background while lessons continue naturally.

Why More Schools Are Investing in AI PTZ Cameras

The way schools deliver education has changed significantly over the past few years. Recording lessons is no longer reserved for universities or distance education providers. Many primary and secondary schools are now incorporating lecture capture and classroom recording into everyday teaching.

There are several reasons for this shift.

Students who miss school due to illness, sporting commitments or other activities can review recorded lessons to stay on track. Teachers can build libraries of learning resources for revision or flipped classroom models. Schools operating across multiple campuses can deliver presentations remotely without requiring staff to travel, while professional development sessions can be recorded for future reference.

Specialist learning spaces also benefit from AI-powered cameras. Science laboratories, STEM classrooms, food technology rooms and performing arts spaces often involve demonstrations where teachers move frequently throughout the room. A static camera positioned at the back of the classroom may struggle to capture these activities effectively, whereas an AI-powered PTZ camera can automatically adjust its framing to follow instruction as it happens.

Beyond teaching, AI PTZ cameras are also increasingly being used in lecture theatres, school halls, libraries and administration spaces for presentations, meetings and community events.

AI Features That Actually Improve Teaching

Manufacturers often advertise a long list of AI features, but not every capability provides the same value in an educational environment.

When evaluating AI-powered PTZ cameras, these are the features most likely to improve classroom recording and hybrid learning.

Presenter Tracking

Presenter tracking is one of the most valuable features for education.

Instead of remaining fixed on a wide shot, the camera automatically follows the teacher as they move throughout the teaching space. Whether explaining concepts at the whiteboard, demonstrating an experiment or interacting with students, the presenter remains clearly framed without requiring manual camera adjustments.

For teachers, this means they can move naturally around the classroom without having to think about staying within the camera’s field of view. For students watching remotely or reviewing recordings later, it creates a more engaging and professional viewing experience.

Intelligent Whiteboard Recognition

Teaching often involves moving between speaking and writing.

Some advanced AI-powered camera systems can recognise when a teacher begins writing on a whiteboard and temporarily adjust the framing to improve visibility of handwritten content before returning to presenter tracking.

This helps recorded lessons capture not only the teacher, but also the diagrams, equations and notes that are essential to understanding the lesson.

Solutions such as DiscoveryLab Pro extend this concept even further by intelligently responding to how lessons are delivered, allowing recordings to better reflect the natural flow of classroom instruction.

Auto Framing

Not every lesson has a single presenter.

Auto framing allows the camera to automatically adjust its field of view to include everyone participating in the lesson or meeting. As people enter or leave the space, the framing updates accordingly without requiring manual intervention.

This makes auto framing particularly useful for collaborative classrooms, group presentations and staff meetings.

Speaker Tracking

While presenter tracking follows movement, speaker tracking identifies who is speaking and adjusts the camera to frame that person.

Although commonly associated with boardrooms, speaker tracking can also support classroom discussions, student presentations and panel sessions where multiple participants contribute throughout the lesson.

Digital Content Capture

Modern classrooms rely on more than whiteboards.

Interactive displays, presentation software, educational videos and digital resources all play an important role in teaching. Simply pointing a camera at a display often produces reflections, reduced clarity and poor readability for students watching recordings.

Some lecture capture solutions can recognise when presentation content changes and automatically switch to a direct digital capture of the classroom display. Instead of filming the screen, students see the original content exactly as it appears on the teacher’s computer.

https://youtu.be/IygFQRgQ-3E

DiscoveryLab Pro incorporates this capability by detecting activity on the classroom display and intelligently switching between the presenter and the digital content. The result is a recording that combines clear video of the teacher with crisp, pixel-perfect presentation materials, helping students follow lessons more easily when reviewing them later.

AI PTZ Cameras vs Fixed Cameras: Which Is Better for Schools?

Not every classroom requires an AI-powered PTZ camera. For some learning spaces, a fixed camera may be all that’s needed. The right choice depends on how the space is used, how often lessons are recorded and the level of automation the school requires.

A fixed camera can still be an effective solution for smaller classrooms where teachers remain largely at the front of the room or where occasional recording is sufficient.

However, for schools investing in regular lecture capture, hybrid learning or flexible teaching spaces, an AI-powered PTZ camera can significantly improve both the quality of recordings and the overall user experience without increasing the workload for teachers.

Popular AI PTZ Cameras for Schools in 2026

A growing number of manufacturers now offer AI-powered PTZ cameras designed for education. While the best choice depends on room size, teaching style and AV requirements, several models have become popular in schools due to their intelligent tracking features and integration capabilities.

When upgrading classroom technology or meeting spaces, one of the most common questions we hear is:

“Can we just use a TV instead of a commercial display?”

At first glance, the two can appear almost identical. Both are available in a range of sizes, offer excellent image quality and support 4K resolution.

The key difference lies in what they’re designed to do. Consumer TVs are built for home entertainment, while commercial displays are purpose-built for professional environments such as schools and businesses, where reliability, longer operating hours and easier management are essential.

For schools in particular, displays are often deployed across multiple classrooms and expected to remain in service for many years. Choosing the right display can help reduce maintenance, minimise classroom disruptions and deliver better long-term value.

Note: Features vary by manufacturer and model. Before deciding between a consumer TV and a commercial display, talk to the team at D.I.B Audio Visual. We can help you choose a solution that’s appropriate for your space, budget and long-term requirements

Consumer TVs vs Commercial Displays: What’s the Difference?

While consumer TVs and commercial displays may look similar, they’re designed for very different environments.

A TV in a home might only be used for a few hours each day. In contrast, displays in classrooms, libraries, reception areas, meeting rooms and digital signage applications are often in operation throughout the school day and need to integrate with a wider AV system.

Commercial displays are engineered for these environments, offering features that help improve reliability, simplify management and support a wider range of educational and business applications. They’re also available in a variety of formats, including interactive classroom displays, digital signage, video walls and outdoor-rated displays.

Why Schools Choose Commercial Displays

Unlike displays in most homes, classroom and campus displays are often in use throughout the school day. They may also remain on after hours for parent information evenings, community events or school functions.

Many commercial displays are rated for 16/7 or even 24/7 operation. They also incorporate cooling systems designed to support extended daily use, helping maintain reliable performance over time.

Commercial displays are designed for the demands of daily use in learning environments.

Many schools also standardise technology across classrooms or even entire campuses. Using the same commercial display platform creates a more consistent experience for teachers, who can move between classrooms without needing to learn different controls or input configurations. It also simplifies installation, support and future technology upgrades for IT teams.

For schools with dozens—or even hundreds—of displays across a campus, managing each one individually can quickly become time-consuming. Many commercial displays support remote management features that allow authorised staff to:

Schedule displays to power on before the school day begins

Automatically power displays off after school hours

Monitor display status remotely

Install firmware updates across multiple displays

Troubleshoot issues without visiting every classroom

These capabilities can significantly reduce maintenance while helping ensure displays are ready when teachers need them.

The digital signage system at MacKillop Catholic Regional College’s St Mary’s campus allows content to be scheduled and managed remotely, helping staff keep displays updated across multiple campuses.

Easy to See in Bright Learning Spaces

Modern learning environments often include large windows, open learning areas and brightly lit spaces that can make displays harder to see.

While consumer TVs are designed primarily for home environments with controlled lighting, many commercial displays are available with higher brightness levels and anti-glare finishes to help keep content clear and readable throughout the day.

Commercial displays are also well suited to digital signage applications where static content such as timetables, campus maps and daily announcements may remain on screen for extended periods. Many models include features designed to help minimise image retention in these situations.

For specialised applications such as outdoor wayfinding and campus signage, outdoor-rated commercial displays are available with high-brightness panels and weather-resistant designs that allow them to remain visible even in direct sunlight.

A Samsung outdoor-rated commercial display installed on the exterior of Footscray West Primary School’s Platypus Building. High-brightness, weather-resistant commercial displays are designed for outdoor digital signage, wayfinding and visitor information.

Better Long-Term Value

School technology is often expected to remain in service well beyond a typical consumer electronics replacement cycle. Many schools plan AV upgrades as part of larger capital works projects or long-term technology strategies, making reliability an important consideration.

Although commercial displays generally have a higher upfront cost than consumer TVs, they’re designed with longevity, serviceability and professional use in mind. Over time, this can help reduce maintenance costs, minimise classroom disruptions and maximise the return on investment.

Warranty is another important consideration. Commercial displays typically include warranties intended for education and business environments, whereas some consumer TV warranties may not cover commercial use. Before installing a TV in a classroom or shared space, it’s worth checking whether the manufacturer’s warranty covers that type of application.

Depending on the application and expected lifespan, a commercial display can also provide a lower total cost of ownership by reducing maintenance, minimising downtime and extending replacement cycles.

When Is a Consumer TV Suitable?

Consumer TVs still have their place.

For low-use areas such as staff kitchens, breakout spaces or rooms where a display is only used occasionally, a consumer TV may be a practical and cost-effective option.

However, for classrooms, STEM rooms, libraries, learning commons, reception areas, meeting rooms and digital signage applications, commercial displays are generally the more appropriate long-term choice.

Final Thoughts

For schools, investing in commercial displays is about more than choosing a screen—it’s about selecting technology that’s designed for the way learning environments operate every day. From classrooms and learning commons to reception areas and outdoor signage, commercial displays provide the reliability, flexibility and management features needed to support teaching, communication and campus-wide information sharing.

This is why, for most classroom, meeting room and digital signage applications, D.I.B Audio Visual recommends commercial displays over consumer TVs.

Whether you’re upgrading a single classroom, fitting out a new building or standardising displays across an entire campus, investing in commercial displays can help create a more reliable, consistent and future-ready learning environment.

Need Help Choosing the Right Display?

When choosing an audio visual partner, it’s easy to focus on the technology itself. Displays, projectors, microphones and control systems are all important, but the success of any AV project depends just as much on the expertise of the team designing, installing and supporting it.

That’s one of the reasons D.I.B Audio Visual is proud to be an AVIXA Gold Corporate Member.

For schools and organisations investing in long-term technology solutions, working with an AVIXA member provides confidence that your AV partner is committed to recognised industry standards, ongoing professional development and delivering quality outcomes.

What is AVIXA?

AVIXA (Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association) is an international trade association for the professional audiovisual industry. It supports AV professionals through education, certification, industry standards, market research and best practice resources.

From classrooms and lecture theatres to corporate boardrooms, theatres and public venues, AVIXA supports the professional AV industry through education, standards and resources that help guide the design, integration and operation of AV systems.

Its education and certification programs are widely recognised across the professional AV industry and are widely regarded as the benchmark for professional AV knowledge.

What Does AVIXA Gold Corporate Membership Mean?

AVIXA Corporate Membership recognises organisations that actively invest in the development of their people and their engagement with the professional AV industry.

As a Gold Corporate Member, D.I.B Audio Visual demonstrates an ongoing commitment to:

Professional education and industry training

Continuous improvement in AV knowledge and best practices

Keeping up with evolving technologies and industry standards

Delivering reliable, well-designed AV solutions

Supporting staff development through recognised AVIXA learning programs

Rather than simply supplying equipment, it reflects a commitment to delivering complete AV solutions backed by technical expertise. For D.I.B Audio Visual, Gold Corporate Membership reflects our ongoing investment in professional development, helping our team stay current with evolving technologies, industry standards and recognised best practices.

Why This Matters for Schools

Technology has become an essential part of modern teaching.

Interactive displays, classroom audio, projection systems, wireless presentation, video conferencing and emergency communication systems all need to work reliably every day. Poorly designed systems can create unnecessary complexity for teachers and increase support requests for school IT teams.

Many AV projects involve technology from multiple manufacturers. Careful system design ensures every component integrates reliably and operates as a single solution.

Working with an AVIXA Gold Corporate Member means your project is supported by a company that values industry best practices throughout the design and installation process.

For schools, this can help ensure:

AV systems are designed around teaching and learning outcomes

Equipment is specified appropriately for each learning space

Systems are intuitive for teachers to use

Installations follow recognised professional practices

Solutions remain practical to support and maintain over time

Whether it’s a single classroom upgrade or a campus-wide technology rollout, thoughtful system design helps maximise the value of your investment.

Supporting Better Workplace Collaboration

The same principles apply across corporate and commercial environments.

Meeting rooms have evolved far beyond simple display screens. Today’s workplaces rely on integrated collaboration spaces that combine video conferencing, wireless presentation, room control, digital signage and high-quality audio.

A custom curved LED video wall installed by D.I.B Audio Visual at Qanstruct’s headquarters, demonstrating the integration of professional AV technologies in modern workplaces.

An AVIXA Gold Corporate Member is committed to staying informed about evolving AV technologies and industry best practices, helping organisations create reliable, easy-to-use collaboration spaces.

For IT managers and facilities teams, this means systems that are easier to manage, easier for staff to use and better aligned with modern workplace requirements.

A Commitment to Ongoing Learning

The AV industry continues to evolve rapidly.

New display technologies, collaboration platforms, assistive listening solutions, networked AV systems and AI-powered meeting tools are constantly changing how organisations communicate.

One of the key benefits of AVIXA membership is access to ongoing education, technical resources and industry research that helps members stay informed as technology develops.

At D.I.B Audio Visual, continuous learning helps our team provide informed advice when designing systems that meet both current needs and future requirements.

Rather than following short-term trends, we focus on recommending technologies that deliver practical value, reliability and long-term performance.

More Than 27 Years of AV Experience

When schools invest in new audio visual technology, they are not simply purchasing projectors or displays—they are investing in learning environments that need to perform reliably for many years. From classrooms and libraries to performing arts centres and multipurpose halls, every AV solution should be designed to meet the needs of teachers, students and school staff.

One of the ways D.I.B Audio Visual demonstrates its experience in education audio visual is through its recognition as an Epson Premium Partner. Having worked with Epson for more than 20 years, our team has extensive experience designing, installing and supporting projection solutions across a wide range of educational environments.

While this partnership reflects our long-standing relationship with Epson, the real value lies in what it means for the schools we work with across Victoria.

What Does Being an Epson Premium Partner Mean?

An Epson Premium Partner is an authorised reseller and integration partner recognised by Epson. This status reflects D.I.B Audio Visual’s long-standing experience designing, installing and supporting projection solutions across education and commercial environments.

Having partnered with Epson for more than two decades, our team has developed a strong understanding of the manufacturer’s projection technologies, recommended installation practices and how these solutions can be applied to different learning spaces.

Bright new Epson EB-PU2213B laser projectors mounted in the Luther College Chapel ceiling. This model delivers 13,000 ANSI lumens—around four times brighter than a typical office projector—making it ideal for large venues.

While Premium Partner status is one indicator of experience, successful AV projects also rely on thoughtful system design, professional installation and ongoing support.

For schools, working with an Epson Premium Partner can provide additional confidence that their AV solution is supported by a team with decades of experience delivering projection solutions for education.

What the Partnership Means for Schools

Choosing the right projection technology is only one part of a successful AV project. Equally important is selecting an experienced integration partner who understands how technology fits within the school’s learning environment.

Working with D.I.B Audio Visual means partnering with a team that combines technical expertise with decades of experience designing, installing and supporting AV systems for education. Our Epson Premium Partner status complements this experience by demonstrating our familiarity with Epson’s projection solutions and recommended deployment practices.

Many schools continue to choose projection because it offers:

Bright, clear images suitable for classrooms of different sizes

Laser projection options with long operational life and reduced maintenance requirements compared with traditional lamp-based projectors

Flexible installation options for both new buildings and refurbishment projects

Wireless presentation and collaboration features across compatible models

Energy-efficient operation across many products in the range

Whether a school is upgrading a single classroom or undertaking a campus-wide technology refresh, D.I.B Audio Visual can help determine whether projection is the right fit for each learning space as part of a broader AV strategy.

How D.I.B Audio Visual Applies This Experience

Experienced System Design

A motorised projector setup in the Mackillop Catholic Regional College Project Space allows the school to roll the screen up when not needed. The screen’s side-tensioning system ensures a perfectly flat surface.

Every school has different teaching spaces, room layouts and learning objectives.

Rather than recommending the same solution for every project, our team designs AV systems that consider:

Room dimensions

Ambient lighting

Viewing distances

Teaching requirements

Existing infrastructure

Opportunities for future expansion

Considering these factors helps the selected projection solution perform as intended within the overall AV system.

Professional Installation

Even high-quality projection technology may not perform to its full potential if it is not installed correctly.

Over more than 20 years working with Epson solutions, D.I.B Audio Visual has designed and installed projection systems across a wide variety of education spaces, including:

General classrooms

STEM learning spaces

Libraries

Administration buildings

School halls

Performing arts centres

Lecture theatres

Flexible learning environments

Careful positioning, calibration, cable management and integration with existing AV infrastructure all contribute to a system that is easier for staff to use and maintain.

Keeping Up with Technology

As an Epson Premium Partner, D.I.B Audio Visual maintains a close working relationship with Epson and stays informed about new products, technologies and developments.

Combined with more than 20 years of experience working with the manufacturer’s projection solutions, this allows our team to provide recommendations based on current technologies that align with each school’s educational and operational requirements.

Rather than selecting equipment based solely on specifications, schools can receive advice that considers how the technology will be used in day-to-day teaching and learning.

Complete Audio Visual Solutions

Some school projects involve more than a single display device.

Depending on the space and teaching requirements, an AV system may also include:

Interactive displays

Audio systems

Wireless presentation solutions

Video conferencing

Control systems

Digital signage

D.I.B Audio Visual designs projection solutions as part of integrated AV systems that support teaching, communication and collaboration across the school.

Supporting Schools Beyond Installation

Installation is one stage of a successful AV project.

Today’s classrooms are more connected than ever before. From displaying lesson content and sharing digital resources to supporting hybrid learning and classroom collaboration, audio visual technology has become an essential part of modern education.

For schools, investing in classroom AV is about more than choosing the latest technology. It’s about creating learning spaces that are reliable, easy to use and designed to support both teachers and students every day.

At D.I.B Audio Visual, we understand that the best classroom AV systems are the ones that work seamlessly in the background. Every solution is designed with usability, reliability and long-term performance in mind, helping schools create learning environments where technology supports teaching rather than becoming a distraction.

Every Classroom Has Different Requirements

No two schools are exactly alike. Room sizes, teaching styles, curriculum requirements and existing infrastructure all influence the right AV solution.

Before recommending equipment, D.I.B Audio Visual takes the time to understand how each learning space will be used. Factors such as viewing distances, classroom layouts, natural lighting, acoustics, existing infrastructure and future technology requirements are all considered during the design process.

Careful planning by D.I.B Audio Visual ensured a neat, consistent finish across every classroom installation.

Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, every classroom AV system is tailored to meet the specific needs of the school, ensuring the technology aligns with both educational goals and day-to-day teaching.

Readability Matters in Every Classroom

One of the most important considerations in classroom AV design is readability. Regardless of where students are seated, lesson content should be clear, easy to read and visible throughout the room. Achieving this requires more than selecting a projector or display—it involves designing the entire system around the classroom itself.

Display size, projector brightness, image resolution, viewing distances, ambient lighting and room layout all influence how well students can see presentations, diagrams, videos and written content. Careful planning helps ensure the technology supports effective teaching while providing a consistent viewing experience for every student.

Schools planning classroom upgrades may also benefit from understanding topics such as selecting the right screen size, determining the appropriate projector brightness and comparing different display technologies. D.I.B has developed several guides to help schools make informed decisions, including:

Classroom Projector Image Size Guide: Choosing the Right Screen Size for Schools

How Many Lumens Does a Classroom Projector Need?

Interactive Projector vs LCD Screen: What’s Better for Classrooms?

Designed Around Teachers and Students

Technology should make teaching easier—not more complicated.

Every classroom AV solution D.I.B designs is centred around the people who use it every day. That means creating systems that are intuitive for teachers to operate while ensuring students can fully engage with classroom technology.

Teachers should be able to enter a classroom, connect their device and begin teaching with minimal setup. Simple, consistent control interfaces reduce unnecessary complexity, minimise the need for technical support and allow teachers to focus on delivering lessons rather than operating equipment.

Depending on a school’s requirements, classroom AV solutions may include:

Interactive displays

Laser projectors

Classroom audio systems

Wireless presentation systems

HDMI and USB-C connectivity

Hearing augmentation systems

Simple room control interfaces

PTZ cameras and video conferencing capabilities for hybrid learning

Accessibility is equally important, particularly in specialist education settings where students have diverse physical and learning needs.

Commbox interactive display on a height-adjustable mount installed at the Broadmeadows Gym Stage Classroom.

At Broadmeadows Special Developmental School, D.I.B Audio Visual installed interactive panels on height-adjustable motorised brackets. This allows the displays to be positioned at appropriate heights for students of different ages, mobility levels and physical abilities. In a specialist learning environment, this flexibility helps ensure classroom technology remains accessible and practical for a wide range of users while supporting inclusive learning spaces.

By considering both teachers and students throughout the design process, D.I.B delivers classroom AV systems that are practical, accessible and straightforward to use across a variety of learning environments.

Consistency Across Every Classroom

Classrooms at Mackillop Catholic Regional College’s new St Mary’s Campus. Epson projectors were mounted above the whiteboards, creating a clean, professional finish.

Consistency is often overlooked, but it can make a significant difference across an entire school.

When classroom technology operates in a similar way from room to room, teachers can move between classrooms with confidence without needing to learn different control systems. This consistency also simplifies staff training, reduces support requests and makes future upgrades easier for school IT teams.

Standardised classroom AV systems help schools manage technology more efficiently while creating a familiar user experience for staff across campus.

Reliable Systems for Long-Term Performance

Schools expect classroom technology to perform reliably throughout its lifespan.

D.I.B Audio Visual focuses on designing systems using commercial-grade equipment from established manufacturers while ensuring each installation is easy to maintain and support over time. Careful equipment selection, thoughtful system design and quality installation all contribute to dependable day-to-day operation.

The result is classroom technology that schools can confidently incorporate into daily teaching while supporting future expansion and upgrades when required.

End-to-End Classroom AV Services

Successful classroom AV projects involve much more than installing displays and speakers.

D.I.B Audio Visual provides a complete service that supports schools through every stage of the project, including:

A modern school gymnasium is no longer just a space for sport. Throughout the year, it becomes the venue for assemblies, award presentations, parent information evenings, performances, exams, guest speakers, graduations and community events. With so many different uses, the audio visual system needs to do far more than play music or display a presentation.

At D.I.B Audio Visual, we design gymnasium AV systems that are reliable, simple to operate and built around how schools actually use their spaces. Rather than adding unnecessary complexity, we focus on creating practical solutions that deliver clear audio, excellent visibility and straightforward operation for every event.

One Space. Many Different Uses.

Unlike a dedicated theatre or classroom, a school gymnasium must support a wide range of activities throughout the school year.

St Catherine’s School gymnasium serves as a versatile space for both assemblies and sports events.

On any given week, the same space may host:

School assemblies

Physical education classes

Student performances

Indoor sporting competitions

Guest presentations

Parent evenings

Community events

Each activity places different demands on the AV system. Speech intelligibility becomes critical during assemblies, while sporting events require displays that remain visible under bright lighting conditions. Performances often need higher-quality audio and flexible microphone options, while everyday users need controls that are easy to understand.

Designing for these varied requirements is where careful planning makes the difference.

Designing Around the School, Not the Technology

Every school gymnasium is different. Ceiling height, room dimensions, wall construction, lighting conditions and seating arrangements all influence how an AV system should be designed.

Rather than applying a standard solution, D.I.B begins by understanding how the space will be used both today and into the future. This allows the system to be tailored to the school’s operational needs instead of simply installing the latest equipment.

Factors considered during design include:

Viewing distances across the entire gym

Ambient and natural lighting

Room acoustics and reverberation

Speaker placement for even audio coverage

Future expansion requirements

Ease of operation for teaching and administrative staff

This planning stage helps ensure the finished system performs consistently across a wide variety of events while remaining intuitive to use.

Clear Audio Is More Important Than Loud Audio

One of the most common challenges in large gymnasiums is poor speech clarity.

High ceilings and hard surfaces naturally create echoes, making announcements difficult to understand even when the volume is increased. Simply installing larger speakers rarely solves the problem.

Instead, D.I.B carefully designs each audio system to achieve even sound coverage throughout the venue while maintaining speech intelligibility. Speaker positioning, acoustic considerations and system tuning all contribute to creating clear, balanced sound that supports both spoken presentations and multimedia content.

Marian College’s gymnasium demonstrates even audio coverage across the entire space.

The result is an environment where students, staff and visitors can hear presentations clearly from almost anywhere in the room.

Displays That Suit Large Spaces

Traditional projection systems can struggle in gymnasiums due to long throw distances, bright ambient lighting and ongoing maintenance requirements.

Depending on the application, schools may benefit from technologies such as commercial laser projection or impact-resistant LED displays that provide greater brightness, improved visibility and reduced maintenance over time.

The right display solution depends on factors including:

Viewing distance

Room brightness

Content being displayed

Frequency of use

Budget considerations

By selecting technology based on the room rather than the latest trend, schools receive a solution that supports both everyday activities and larger events effectively.

Simplicity Encourages Better Use

An advanced AV system only delivers value if staff feel confident using it.

This is why D.I.B places significant emphasis on user experience. Custom control interfaces are designed so everyday functions—such as powering on displays, selecting presentation sources or adjusting audio levels—can be completed with just a few simple steps.

For larger productions or specialised events, more advanced controls can be made available without complicating everyday operation.

Custom AV control interface installed at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College

This balance between functionality and simplicity reduces training requirements while helping schools make full use of their investment.

Planning Early Delivers Better Outcomes

Many of the most successful gymnasium AV projects begin well before construction is complete.

D.I.B Audio Visual was involved early in construction of Footscray West Primary School’s gymnasium to ensure everything was correctly wired and positioned

Early collaboration with architects, builders and project managers allows cabling, mounting structures, power requirements and equipment locations to be incorporated into the building design rather than added afterwards.

This approach often results in:

Cleaner installations

Better equipment integration

Greater flexibility for future upgrades

Whether the project is a new gymnasium or the refurbishment of an existing facility, early AV planning helps schools achieve a more cohesive outcome.

Supporting Schools Beyond Installation

Installing the system is only part of the project.

Ongoing servicing, maintenance and technical support help schools maximise the lifespan of their investment while ensuring systems remain operational throughout the school year.

Because D.I.B designs, supplies, installs and supports its own systems, schools have a single point of contact from the initial consultation through to ongoing service and future upgrades. This continuity simplifies support and helps maintain consistent performance over time.

Creating Gymnasium AV Systems That Schools Can Rely On

A school gymnasium is one of the busiest and most versatile spaces on campus. Its technology should support every assembly, performance, presentation and sporting event without creating unnecessary complexity for staff.

At D.I.B Audio Visual, our approach combines thoughtful design, practical technology and user-friendly operation to create gymnasium AV systems that meet the everyday needs of schools while remaining flexible for future requirements.

Whether you’re planning a new facility or upgrading an existing gymnasium, investing in a well-designed AV system helps ensure the space can continue to support learning, communication and community engagement for years to come.

To help schools navigate the planning process, we’ve also created Designing for Impact: A Gym AV Guide—a practical resource covering key considerations for designing and upgrading gymnasium AV systems. You can explore the guide here: Designing for Impact: A Gym AV Guide.
