Mentone Grammar, situated in Bayside Melbourne and dating back to the 1920’s, is an independent school catering for boys and girls from kindergarten and pre-prep level in the Early Learning Centre, right through to senior students completing Year 12 at the Frogmore Senior Campus.
A contemporary learning environment with state of the art facilities and the latest learning technologies, Mentone Grammar offers a unique education model where students in Years 5-9 learn in separate gender classes, and all other classes are co-educational.
Mentone Grammar has excellent sporting and performing arts facilities, and construction is currently underway on the Eblana Learning Centre, a new junior school with eight classrooms, as well as multipurpose, art, and music/drama rooms.
Mentone Grammar has installed DVC (Digital Video Commander) recently and is already using the system to great effect. With the science technicians managing the schools audio visual resources they have been given access to the DVC administration module, and it is the science faculty that is driving the implementation of the system.
Television programmes are being recorded by library staff who also have access to the administration module. The time and space saving advantages offered by DVC are already obvious as it is no longer necessary to record and store programmes on cumbersome VHS tapes. Programmes are now captured and stored on the new DVC server with 8 TB drives.
Once captured the programmes may be quickly edited. DVC makes it easy to trim advertisements from the beginning, end and wherever they appear throughout a programme. The programme can then be appropriately classified and quickly saved away with a synopsis. This will make the programmed easy to find in the future when users are searching for material with keywords.
Training has been provided by D.I.B. Australia to users of the DVC system to ensure that it is imbedded quickly. Topics covered in training sessions have included how to schedule recordings, and edit and store recorded material, as well as how to load the player software and access live TV and stored video content for classroom use.
Mentone Grammar has also commenced using the DVC system to manage its digital signage content. They had a successful trial and plan to implement this module of the DVC system across other digital signage devices in the coming months.
