Balwyn High’s portable classrooms get new AV resources

Balwyn High School strives to foster intellectual growth and personal development within their students, providing a foundation of future success by equipping students with a new set of skills, helping them adapt to and tackle the rapidly changing world ahead. The school is committed to assisting young people become resilient and independent individuals with the capacity to solve problems, think creatively and think critically. In turn, students are expected to have a commitment to excellence, ultimately developing into responsible global citizens with an active concern for others and for the environment. Acknowledging this, Balwyn High acknowledges the importance of employing new equipment to better facilitate effective teaching and learning.

The team at DIB worked with Balwyn High to fit new audiovisual equipment in their portable buildings. This primarily involved installing new projector and speaker systems in each classroom.

Installation process

In all of the classrooms, an EPSON EB-696Ui Ultra Short Throw Finger Touch Interactive Projector was fitted. These projectors are slowly changing the current teaching environment, incorporating elements of interactivity to a lesson plan that can effectively boost student engagement. As the projector is interactive, it can turn an existing whiteboard, or any flat surface, into an interactive whiteboard. Students can engage with the projector by using their fingers or with the provided pens, allowing teachers to use this technology to entice students to participate. The projector is also easy and simple to use: the projector is not only self-calibrating, but there are no drivers to install. This gives teachers some peace of mind, as they do not need to worry about setting up the classroom technology.

With 3500 ANSI lumens of output and in full HD resolution, the projector is capable of producing incredibly vibrant and brilliant images, giving presentations and displays an extra element of liveliness.

To provide audio reinforcement for the built-in speakers within the projector, the team at DIB installed a pair of 2 x  30 Watt Kramer powered stereo speakers. These speakers are great for filling the classroom with sound, allowing to students to sit anywhere in the room and still be able to heard any audio or video played. The speaker also features a second audio input made for direct 3.5mm auxilary audio connection, allowing users to play music from an external audio device (such as an iPod) to the speakers.

A JED (T460) four button LCD wall control panel was also installed in each room. These panels are the pinnacle of simplicity, making it easier to utilise the installed system by placing all functionality in one place. These panels are setup to include buttons that turn the projector on or off, control the volume, and select the source to be projected.

2 HDMI input plate connections, along with a VGA/audio input plate connection and a USB wall plate fit for interactive use, were installed. These allow users to connect their external devices, or to utilise some of the projector’s features, such as saving notes from the projector directly to the USB.
