Projection mapping involves using irregularly shaped objects as a display surface for a video projector. This technique is often used by artists to create stunning experiences.
In many cases, mapping has required state-of-the-art projectors worth tens of thousands of dollars, with multiple projectors often being requierd for one display. This high cost makes the exercise relatively inaccessible for many. However, DIB Australia were tasked with providing the City of Port Philip with a low cost projector that could be used for this purpose. An Epson EB-G7905U WUXGA was chosen, projecting in full HD resolution with a 50,000:1 contrast ratio. While 7,000 lumens of brightness would not be enough for this kind of projector mapping in a normal projector, the EB-G7905U was able to produce stunning results thanks to Epson’s colour brightness technology.
A demo of the projector took place which involved projecting onto the iconic South Melbourne Town Hall. The results speak for themselves, as shown in the video below.
The designer of the graphics for the display, a graduate from the JMC Academy, was very impressed with the projector. The great result is thanks to Epson’s modern technology which lets their projectors produce colours that are three times brighter than leading competitive products. This makes for a more vibrant and detailed image. Epson has set the new standard with this colour brightness technology and it comes with all their modern projectors.
Thanks to Epson’s three times brighter colours, DIB were able to deliver a projector capable of mapping at a fraction of the normal cost.
