Project Overview
Luther College in Croydon, Victoria, is a co-educational independent secondary school founded in 1964, guided by its Lutheran heritage and commitment to holistic education. For some time, the College has partnered with D.I.B Audio Visual to enhance its learning and community spaces.
Most recently, Luther College completed the second stage of an AV upgrade for its Chapel—a space that serves not only as a place of worship but also as a lecture theatre, basic performance venue, and gathering place for parents and the wider school community.
The Chapel already had an established AV setup, but much of it was more than 15 years old and increasingly difficult to use. Equipment performance had diminished, the control system was unreliable and complicated, and the room’s audio tuning had been altered, leaving staff with a system that was hard to manage and inconsistent in quality.
To address these challenges, DIB began with a consulting process—meeting with different user groups including the Chapel team, music department, and IT staff—to fully understand the requirements of the space. From there, the College opted for a staged approach to upgrade works.
Stage one focused on projection, replacing outdated models with brighter, higher resolution, and reliable Epson laser projectors. Stage two went deeper, rebuilding the AV back and brain with Extron audio processing and control, new amplifiers, and careful re-tuning of the Chapel’s many speakers and channels. Due to its unique shape and required coverage pattern, engineers spent two days professionally balancing the room to achieve even, high-quality sound coverage, then locked down the system so day-to-day users couldn’t accidentally change critical settings.
Smaller but important improvements were also added. A foldback speaker was hidden inside the lectern, ensuring presenters hear themselves clearly without the distracting “delayed echo” caused by reflected sound. A rear-facing confidence monitor now allows speakers to view slides, notes, or a countdown timer without turning away from the audience. For everyday use, a Bluetooth wall panel makes it simple to connect a phone or laptop for music playback.
Importantly, the system now supports two modes of operation. In simple mode, staff can run an event with just a few button presses. In advanced mode, trained operators have full control via the Chapel’s mixing desk—ideal for concerts and complex productions.
With this upgrade, Luther College now has a Chapel AV system that is modern, reliable, and intuitive—accessible for everyday gatherings while fully capable of supporting the most demanding school events.
