Hawthorn Early Years – Delivering the message with OneLan signage

Located in a state-of-the-art custom built facility, Hawthorn Early Year’s educational spaces, both indoor and out, allow for maximum engagement from children.  HEY offers Long Day Care for children aged 4 months to 5 year olds and Integrated 3 and 4 year old Kindergarten programs in both Long Day Care and Sessional classrooms. Since opening their doors in 2013, HEY has raised the bar,  now overachieving in all 7 areas of the National Quality Standard, something of which they’re extremely proud and constantly working hard to maintain.

After initially working with DIB Audio Visual in 2015 on a projection and audio system for the main hub area in the centre, the team at HEY approached DIBAV with regards to implementing some digital signage displays to provide live information for parents, staff and visitors. As well as wanting to convey public information, such as news and weather, the main application of the system was to provide location specific information such as building directory, upcoming events, holidays and most importantly, information for parents regarding the day-to-day of the centre.

It was crucial that the digital signage system back-end was simple to use, as well as quick and fluid to update as it was to be controlled locally by the staff at HEY, sometimes needing to be updated on the fly to deliver a targeted message to visitors.

After understanding just what the signage system was needing to convey, and how it was to be used and operated, the OneLan Digital Signage Solution was installed in not one, but two locations in the centre.

Targeted Digital Signage

The initial digital signage system was installed in the Foyer and mainly used to deliver information to the public. This comprised of a Philips 43” D-Line Commercial Monitor, featuring Full HD resolution, slim neat design and 3 year professional warranty – rated for 24/7 use. Due to the curved walls, and still wanting to ensure the display was installed in the position most likely to capture attention, the Philips 43” Display was paired with an Atdec TH-3070-CTS Ceiling Mount.

The second digital signage system was installed in the staff room and was used to deliver the same information in the foyer, but also needed the ability to update completely independently to the Foyer, and convey internal information to staff.

The OneLan Signage Players that were mounted behind each of the two Philips displays, the NTB-HD-10-SA, not only facilitated the easy updating of content, scheduling of various ‘playlists’ for various times during the day and the ability to turn on and off the Philips panels automatically when content was scheduled to play, but also allowed both systems to run independently and allow information portrayed to be specific to the audience it was addressing.

A Complete System

DIBAV’s engineer assisted the staff at HEY in putting together all the initial media zones of the template layouts, which ended up comprising of scrolling text zones, picture/video zones & ticker zones.

A local HDMI wall input plate was also installed to enable the easy connection of a laptop to the Philips screen, turning the digital signage system into a live presentation system if required. This was especially useful in the staff room in the cases of staff meetings or training sessions.

The switching between the Digital Signage and the connected laptop is controlled via a JOEY Micro 6 button custom programmed controller.
